Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP) is a unique initiative of the Government of Gujarat that aims to create an integrated, state-wide, university and institute-based innovation ecosystem to support innovations and ideas of young students and provide a positive environment for properly harnessing their creative pursuit. This policy is in synchronization with central efforts like the Make in India, Startup India, Atal Innovation Mission, National Innovation Council etc. It has the following key objectives-
Developing student centric Innovation and Pre-incubation Ecosystem for Students.
Creating an environment for creativity to flourish and an end-to-end support system in educational institutions to allow ample support to ideas for better execution.
Build internal capacity of educational institutions and key components of the innovation ecosystem.
Create pathways for the mind to market.
Create a common platform to showcase, support and upscale innovations for motivating stakeholders as well as for an opportunity to create value for money and value for many.
The institute cell shall utilize the grant for students’ start-ups for the following activities:
a) Prototype Support
b) Patent Support
c) Activities, such as documentation, dissemination, creation of the pre-incubation facility, conferences, hackathons, academic courses of start-up and innovation, STTPS, other pedagogical and academic interventions and other operational expenditures.
For smooth functioning of SSIP activities at the institute, the following three SSIP committees are formed. They are as followed:
Centralized SSIP Committee
Institute level SSIP Committee
Project management Unit.
Process Followed By SSIP cell:
Upon receiving an idea from students, the respective committee shall evaluate the idea to check whether the idea is feasible in the market or not. Once the idea is validated by the department level SSIP committee and institute level SSIP committee, the students can avail financial support for proof of concept and prototype development. Students will also receive patent filing support if the project/innovation is patentable approved by the IPR Scrutiny committee.
